I’m one of those people who thinks buying skin care is more fun than buying makeup. (I know, weird!)
When I was younger, I would go to the mall and drugstores with friends. While they’d ogle over the lipsticks and nail polishes, I’d always be attracted to the latest skin lotions. The different scents. The brands. Those little capsules that break open and ooze a mysterious gold-flaked serum.
It started when I was about 10 years old and attended a Mary Kay party with my mom and some ladies from our neighborhood. I still remember the Mary Kay representative pulling me away from the cookie table to give me some personalized beauty advice.
“Take care of your skin,” she said intensely peering into my eyes. “It’s the most important thing you can do.”
That brief heart to heart made such an impression on me. I probably went home that very night, washed my face carefully, and started wearing skin lotion religiously.
Don’t misunderstand. I do love sparkly eyeshadows and glossy pink lipgloss too, but something about skin care just seems so much more fundamental to me. In fact, the whole prepping the face for makeup in the morning and then prepping the face for bed at night is just so, well, relaxing to me.
Through the years, I’ve tried my share of skin lotions at high (Creme de la Mer) and low prices (Oil of Olay) with various results. Creme de la Mer is certainly lovely and feels indulgent, but my dermatologist said there’s absolutely nothing special about the ingredients that warrant the high price. Oil of Olay tends to be too greasy for me and causes breakouts.
About 8 years ago, my dermatologist recommended Eucerin as a great everyday skin lotion, and I’ve been using it ever since.
This lotion goes on smooth, absorbs quickly, and offers SPF 30! Best of all, it hovers between $10-$12 in most stores like Ulta or Target (and it even goes as low as $7 on Amazon)
Do you have a favorite everyday skin lotion? When do you remember first learning about skin care?
